This trophy was presented to Bernhard Langer upon his triumph at the 1997 Italian Open, one of his 42 European Tour victories.
In 2022, Bernhard generously donated this trophy to the German Club Golf Group.
Since then, the trophy has been bestowed upon the victor of the season-long points race, recognizing the German Club’s Top Golfer of the Year. The name of the recipient will be inscribed on the trophy’s display plate, while the trophy itself will remain on display at the German Club.

The 1997 Italian Open Trophy
"a Significant Memorabilia"
In 1996, Bernhard Langer encountered challenges with his putting and transitioned to the long putter. This adjustment proved arduous, but he achieved a breakthrough at the 1997 Italian Open, securing his first victory utilizing the broom-handle putter. José Maria Olazabal secured second place, while Darren Clark finished third. Other notable players, Lee Westwood and Costantino Rocca, were tied for sixth place.
The 1996 Italian Open victory marked the resumption of his illustrious career. Bernhard Langer proceeded to win the Benson & Hedges International in Great Britain the following week.
The 1997 Italian Open featured a roster of most players who later that year would contribute to the victorious European team at the Ryder Cup at Valderrama. Bernhard played a pivotal role in the triumphant European squad that defeated the United States. On a dramatic final day, Bernhard’s 2:1 victory on the iconic 17th hole secured the retention of the Ryder Cup on European soil for another two years.
Since then, Bernhard Langer’s career has continued to progress, culminating in his remarkable achievements on the Seniors tour, making him the most successful player of all time on that tour.
